It can also be effectively used with protein-based fibers like wool, alpaca, and leather; however, for optimal results, the dye solution should be acidified with vinegar or citric acid. Before application, ensure your fabric or material is pre-soaked for approximately 20 minutes in a solution of one cup of soda ash per gallon of water. This crucial step ensures the dye becomes permanent and creates a washfast, vibrant result. Achieve an even, brilliant color by using a general ratio of one cup of water to 2 teaspoons of dye powder. This ratio can be easily adjusted: dilute the mixture for soft, dreamy pastels or increase the dye concentration for deeper, more intense shades. Furthermore, Procion MX colors are fully mixable, allowing you to create the perfect custom shade for any project! A little goes a long way: one 2/3oz jar of dye powder can color approximately 1lb of dry fabric. Explore traditional methods like Shibori tie-dye by folding and tying your fabric into intricate patterns before dye application. Because it’s a powder, Procion MX is also excellent for ice dyeing; simply sprinkle the powder over ice on your fabric and allow it to melt, creating unique watercolor effects.
